In this section you can find a brief description of the current technologies we are using in our smart home lab.
Web Cameras
Web cameras have web servers running inside them, so Internet browsers can be used to monitor what is going on in the home. They also come with authentication features, so only the appropriate users can view the cameras images. Visit www.control4.com for more information.
X10 and Insteon
X10 and Insteon are powerline control technologies that enable computer control and automation of lamps and appliances. They also support some sensor technology as well, such as motion sensors and door open/close sensors. Visit www.x10.com, www.insteon.net, or www.control4.com for more information.
X10 Powermid Receiver/IR Emitter - Model PEX03 (RE549)
Product Description If you have speakers or TVs in a separate room from your stereo/VCR/cable box, you know how inconvenient it is to adjust the volume, change DSS channels, radio stations, etc. Infrared (IR) remotes do not work through walls. You have to walk into the other room any time you want to make a change. With the Powermid™ you can now control your equipment through walls up to 100 ft. away. Point your remote at the Powermid™ Transmitter, it converts the IR signal into a radio frequency (RF) signal that can pass through walls. In the room where your audio/video equipment is located, the receiver converts the RF signal back into IR and transmits it to your equipment. The transmitter even blinks a red light to indicate that it is receiving your command. You'll need this item if you need to control equipment from more than one room. (Receiver sold separately.) Visit this site, this Amazon page or this Amazon page, or the manual for more information.
Phidgets Devices
Phidgets are a collection of USB-based sensors and actuators that can be used to monitor conditions and events in the environment and move small objects, such as the blinds. The Phidgets devices we most frequently use are RFID readers and environmental sensors, such as light, temperature, humidity, and pressure sensors. Visit www.phidgets.com for more information.
EasySen WiEye
EasySen WiEye provides Long-range passive infrared (PIR) sensor for detecting human presence and visual light and acoustic sensors complementing the PIR sensor for improved detection.
SBT80
Plug-in multi-sensor board for IEEE 802.15.4 compliant TelosB wireless mote. Eight (8) sensor channels.
SBT30EDU
Economical sensor board for prototyping, can be used to connect external signals or custom sensors. Light, IR and acoustic sensors on-board.
